Australia is a country full of contrasts.
We have ancient landscapes and modern cities, tropical rainforests and enormous deserts, tiny country towns and more coastline than most of us could explore in a lifetime.
We also have animals found nowhere else, foods we grew up with, inventions that became part of everyday life and a way of doing things that can sometimes leave visitors scratching their heads.
Only in Australia was created to bring those stories together.
More Than Kangaroos and the Outback
Australia is known around the world for kangaroos, koalas, beaches and the outback.
But there is much more to our story.
It’s the Hills Hoist turning in a suburban backyard.
The country pub that’s been serving the same community for generations.
Billy tea beside a campfire.
The local agricultural show.
The Flying Doctors crossing enormous distances to reach people who need help.
The characters who shaped our history.
The towns that appeared because somebody found gold, opal or something else worth digging for.
And the little Australian habits we barely notice until someone from overseas asks, “Why do you do that?”

Only in Australia isn’t intended to be another generic travel website.
It’s about discovering why places, traditions and familiar Australian things are interesting.
You’ll find stories covering:

Some stories are serious.

Australia’s Story Began Long Before European Settlement
Australia’s history stretches back far beyond the arrival of the First Fleet.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on and cared for this continent and its islands for tens of thousands of years, creating the world’s oldest continuing living cultures.
Their histories, knowledge, cultures and continuing connection to Country are an essential part of Australia’s story.
Only in Australia aims to recognise that history while exploring the many different people and experiences that have shaped the country we know today.
Why I Created Only in Australia
I’m an Australian who enjoys discovering the stories behind the things we often take for granted.
Sometimes I’ll come across something I’ve known all my life and suddenly wonder:
Where did that actually come from?
Who invented it?
Why did Australians start doing that?
How did that little town get there?
Why is that animal found here and almost nowhere else?
And occasionally:
Is that really just an Australian thing?
One question tends to lead to another.
Only in Australia grew from that curiosity.
The aim is simple — to build a collection of interesting Australian stories that people can explore, enjoy and hopefully learn something from along the way.
Celebrating the Familiar and Discovering the Forgotten
Not every important Australian story is famous.
Some belong to small towns.
Some belong to ordinary families.
Some are hidden in old buildings, country cemeteries, abandoned settlements and forgotten pieces of history.
Others are sitting in our kitchens, hanging in our backyards or driving down a country road.
Sometimes the most interesting stories are attached to things we’ve stopped noticing because they’ve always been there.
Only in Australia is about noticing them again.
Still Exploring
Australia is far too big, too old and too interesting to ever run out of stories.
And that’s exactly the point.
Only in Australia will continue to grow as new places, people, traditions and pieces of history are added.
